For ages ago, the senior category so called “masters” has been organizing swimming competitions.

The first senior swimming competition was held in the United States in 1970, In Hungary it was organized in August 1971 in Gyula.

After national competitions and championships, the system of continental championships, world championships has also evolved. Masters became an official member of FINA at the 1986 Congress in Madrid.

World Championships are held in every even years, the European Championships in odd years.
