Dear Friends, Dear Master Athletes,

Amidst the current circumstances and due to the high uncertainty of the future, the Organising Committee of the 2021 LEN European Championships, together with the Government of Hungary and LEN had to take the utterly painful decision to cancel the 2021 European Masters Championships in Budapest in all aquatic disciplines.

Up until the last moments the Local Organising Committee tried to evaluate all options, including postponing the event till late summer or early autumn but after consulting with the responsible authorities, and above others the world-famous Semmelweis Medical University, the main service-provider and adviser of our LOC in these troubled times, we couldn’t reach any other conclusion than to cancel the event. Naturally, all Master athletes who have a valid registration will be refunded soon, with the unavoidable deduction of the fees imposed by the banks on the LOC.

We are still living in the frightening shadow of the global pandemic. Though we are all hoping and perhaps expecting that soon the strict lockdown measures and the vaccination will ease all these hardships, still, there is no clear indication that a mass sport event like our Masters can be organised the usual way this year.

The LEN European Masters Championships have always been and need to be the grand celebration of reunion, the joy of sporting action and free movement around the venues and in the wonderful city of Budapest. As of today, we can’t see any of these values prevail any time in 2021. We do hope however that in the near future we can welcome all of you in Budapest either as a tourist or as an athlete at a Masters event.

On behalf of the entire LOC and the Hungarian nation, I would like to express my sincere apologies for keeping you all hoping and waiting for these past months. As a former athlete, who has been denied the chance to defend his Olympic title in 1984, I know how painful this decision might be to you, as you have deserved to be part of the magic, and would have loved to race in our fantastic venues and enjoy all the beauties our magnificent capital can offer.

Once again, we are very sorry if this announcement has ruined your plans and dreams – still believe that you will understand the reasons behind our decision.

Best wishes,

Sándor Wladár

President of the Hungarian Swimming Association
